For Immediate Release Chardon FD Battles HOT chemical fire at Metal Coatings plant. 7/27/2002 - Chardon, OH - A major industrial fire brought several Lake and Geauga County mutual aid departments to aid in the extinguishment of a chemical fire at the Metal Coatings International plant on Industrial Parkway in the City of Chardon. The fire occurred when a water line burst, sending water onto powered zinc and lime, which is extremely water reactive. The first arriving engine crew, who had been paged for a fire alarm (pull station activation) found a black pillar of smoke and flames out the roof of the plant at ~6pm Saturday. The difficult fire was made worse by the 90+ degree heat, high humidity, and stubborn reactivity of the zinc compound. Over 100 firefighters battled the heat to get the fire under control. Water, Foam, and eventually, dry sand were used to extinguish the blaze, which burned a large hole in the metal roof of the structure. Responding fire departments included Chardon, Hambden, Munson, Burton, Chesterland, Concord, Painesville City, Middlefield, Troy, Auburn, and the Geauga County Hazmat Team. Special thanks to the Chardon City Police Dept, Chardon Service Dept., and Chardon Burger King for their support roles.
