Chardon City receives new Sutphen Tower Ladder 49

(Updated 3/2003) - The Chardon Volunteer Fire Department took delivery of a new Sutphen 100-foot Tower Ladder on Thursday, February 27th, 2003.  The truck has been given the number designation "3349".  The truck replaces a 1973 Snorkle, which had shown major maintenance problems and failures over the past few years. The new aerial, purchased by the City of Chardon for approximately $720,000, will cover the city's major industrial areas, and meet ISO requirements.  A full complement of new equipment, from axes and saws to hydraulic tools, nozzles, and air packs make this vehicle the premier piece of Chardon fire apparatus.

(The picture above shows the dimensions of the new truck)

Specifications on the new vehicle include a 505-horsepower Cat C-12 engine, an Allison heavy-duty 4060 transmission, and Hale 2000 GPM fire pump.  The vehicle carries 500 gallons of water.  Capt. Mike Homovec coordinated the detailed specifications, in order to "get the best truck for the dollar".

Personnel are being continuously training on the new truck.  The new truck is designed to last 20-30 years.  The vehicle will be the first true TRUCK COMPANY in Geauga County, possessing a full complement of staffing and equipment, as required by the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association).  The vehicle will respond on all major fires in the City of Chardon, and outlying communities upon request.  It can also be used for a variety of other purposes, including technical rescues, which require rope riggings.

We invite our residents and people within surrounding communities to come see the new ladder truck.  Watch for it at parades and in the back of the station during trainings.
