FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Metro LifeFlight crew teaches pediatric emergencies class at Chardon FD
3/2003 - Chardon, OH The staff of Cleveland Metro LifeFlight conducted a P.E.P.P. Course (Pediatric Education for PreHospital Providers) at the Chardon Fire Department on Mar. 1 & 2, 2003. Members of Chardon and Troy Fire Departments participated. This course, developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics, teaches unique aspects of assessing and treating the pediatric patient, including medical & trauma assessment, psychosocial issues, differences between the age groups of children and their responses to injury, and child abuse recognition and reporting. The course included a BLS portion (for basic EMT's), as well as an ALS portion (for paramedics and nurses). Key concepts of pediatric care were covered, including hands-on training with a variety of pediatric devices and manikins. The course cost for Chardon's personnel was over $2000, however ALL of the cost was completely covered by an Ohio Department of EMS grant received in June 2002. No cost to the residents of Chardon was incurred, thanks to funds collected from seat belt fines throughout Ohio. The Chardon Fire Department would like to sincerely thank Chris Manachi, RN, Harry Rees, RN, and Jason Welch, RN from the staff of Metro LifeFlight for bringing their high-quality educational style to our department. Departments interested in PEPP training can contact Carolyn Nieman, RN at Metro at 216-778-3090 for more details.
