FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

City of Chardon Disaster Warning Siren System Ready To Warn Public

Disaster warning sirens, like the one on the left, are located on South St. across from the Burlington Green Development and on Fifth Ave., near a self-storage facility. An older siren, like the one on the right, (formerly used to alert our volunteer firemen) is located behind the fire station at 110 S.Hambden St.

4/2003 - Chardon, OH

The City of Chardon maintains a three-siren emergency warning system, in the event of a disaster.  This system will be used primarily for tornado or severe storm alerts, however the system can be used for emergency broadcasting system activations, chemical releases, etc.  In the event that you hear the siren, you should seek shelter immediately, and tune to your local radio or TV stations for directives.

According to a recent press release, Chardon officials indicate the following:

"3/19/03 The City of Chardon takes this opportunity to remind its residents and advise motorists using its streets, regarding alerts from the outdoor warning sirens. The purpose is to alert persons outdoors to seek immediate shelter indoors from a tornado having been sighted in the immediate vicinity. This is the time of year to expect weather emergencies and the tornado season is upon us. Sirens will be activated with a continuous high pitched wail until the danger has passed.

With the upcoming war with Iraq, and the potential for a terrorist attack involving the use of either chemical, biological or nuclear attack, these sirens will also be used to warn those outdoors regarding such events, should they occur locally. In either case, citizens should seek immediate shelter indoors, and monitor your local radio or television stations, for further information and instruction.

Citizens are also reminded these sirens are tested on the first Wednesday of every month for a one-minute interval and should not be alarmed when heard for this brief test.

Strategically placed sirens are located in the following locations;

-South St., near the Village Station office complex

-Fifth Avenue, between Washington and Center St.

-Behind Fire Department, directly behind Pilgrim Christian Church, by the antenna tower
