Fire Behavior Lab created by Chardon & Hambden Fire Departments
Two box cars have been placed together to create the Chardon/Hambden Fire Behavior Lab 1/2006 - Chardon, Ohio A joint effort by the Chardon and Hambden Fire Departments in Geauga County, Ohio have yielded a custom built "burn trailer lab", where fire behavior can be experienced by fire fighters in a safe, controlled environment. The structure is made of two donated box cars, and is located on the secure grounds of the Chardon Municipal Water Treatment plant. All of the cutting, welding, and fabricating has been done by fire department volunteers. The burn building has been used at least six times now, with great results. Three Ohio fire classes have reaped the benefits of the lab.
Strict adherence to NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) recommendations, including qualified fire instructors and standby equipment is essential to the safe use of the structure. Personnel wear full turnout gear and self-contained breathing apparatus when inside the structure.
