FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Residential "Knox Box Loaner" program helps fire department get into your home in emergencies
Deputy Fire Marshal Bill Crowley shows how the Knox Box key holder hangs from your door, and allows emergency workers to rapidly get in, without breaking windows or doors. 6/2006 - Chardon, Ohio Deputy Fire Marshal Bill Crowley is actively looking for home owners that
would like to participate in the: " KNOXBOX LOANER PROGRAM" FOR RESIDENTS OF What
is a KnoxBox? A KnoxBox is a
heavy duty key box for the storage of a door key and can either be hung from a
door or be mounted to a building. Only
the Fire Department has a key that will open the KnoxBox once a key is secured
in it and only Chardon Fire Departments key will open KnoxBoxes provided by us. What
is the purpose of the program? Many
times, the fire department receives calls, from concerned residents, relatives
and friends, about how the fire
department will get in to a home to help them or their elderly, disabled, ill,
infirm or incapacitated person, or if they set off their medical alert alarm. Many
times they offer to leave a key with the fire department.
Due to the many vehicles we have and the amount of keys we would have to
carry, accepting these keys would create more of a hindrance then a help.
To provide a simpler and quicker access program, we decided to initiate
the "Residential KnoxBox Loaner Program".
Thanks to the generous donation of $2000.00 from The Fraternal Order of
Eagles, Geauga Aerie 2216, located in Chardon, we were able to start the program
with ten (10) Residential KnoxBoxes. This
is a courtesy service provided by us to the residents within our protection
area, but does not guarantee access to or permanent availability of this program
due to limited supply of the KnoxBoxes. THIS
PROGRAM IS NOT FOR COMMERCIAL USE. The
department requests that a simple application form be filled out for review with
simple information such as contacts people and numbers, some medical history and
physician history, reason requested
and some other minor information and consent to the "Terms of Use" set
up for the program. If the
application is approved, we request a fifty dollar ($50.00) fully refundable
deposit be made for the use of the box. A
fire department member will then come the residence and install the KnoxBox for
the person in need and secure the door key in the KnoxBox. If
interested in the program, or if you wish to make a tax deductible donation to
assist the program, please contact the Chardon Fire Department at the number
above. The
Chardon Fire Department is a non-profit 501[C][3] organization.
