14 Chardon Fire members improve fitness during 911 Fitness Challenge
A $78,000 Firefighter Fitness Grant has allowed Chardon Fire to create a new fitness center 4/2007 - Chardon, Ohio 14 members of the RE ACT grant money from the federal government has allowed Chardon Fire Department to upgrade its fitness program. Over $78,000 is being used to provide physicals for all department personnel, send four staff members to become fitness trainers, and purchase a state-of-the-art fitness center. The center, located in the old village council chambers at the fire station, is complete with both aerobic conditioning machines and weight-lifting equipment. The equipment was purchased after consulting with a physical therapist with a fitness specialty. Chief Larry Gaspar indicated that, "stretching, flexibility, strength conditioning, and aerobic stamina improve firefighter fitness and decrease injuries on the job". A department wellness program is being created, including smoking cessation, weight loss, and healthy lifestyle components.
