FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Chardon FD purchases 2nd new ambulanceBy Capt. John Blauch, RN, Paramedic 11/15/2000 -- Chardon Village, Ohio The Chardon Fire Department recently took delivery of another 2000 AEV Freightliner Ambulance to serve as the second advanced life support rescue squad in the department's fleet. The new squad, named "3355" was placed in-service in early September, and is packed with the latest state-of-the-art technology. The new squad has a reliable Freightliner chassis, dual digital siren systems, an on-board leveling device to assist in stretcher removal, and a tremendous amount of cargo space. It will be rotated as the front line rescue squad with another similar squad ("3353"), purchased last year by the department. The sudden need to purchase the second new squad in a year was forced by a major equipment breakdown on the department's 1994 Horton backup ambulance. Chardon Asst. Chief & President Gene Adams stated, "We have had major electrical & mechanical nightmares with the Horton squad for the past few years. A recent break down took the squad out of service three times in one month. The backup squad is used frequently, due to our call volume, and it was out of service more than it was in. We felt we had to act in the best interests of the citizens we protect. The expenditure to keep the old squad in-service would have exceeded several thousand dollars, with no guarantee that the problem would not recur." The $132,000 squad was purchased entirely with funds saved by the privately incorporated fire department for vehicle purchases. The funds come from tax levy monies from Chardon Village, Chardon Township, and Claridon Township.
