2002 - On-Scene with Chardon Fire

 

(FYI - This page will take a few moments to load, as the pictures are in medium/high resolution.  Most scene pictures are taken with a Sony Handicam Camcorder mounted in Engine 3322. The 8mm film is then processed through a computer and still shots are obtained using Dazzle Video 80 software. Picture quality is affected by windshield glare, long play resolution, etc.)

 

 

 

Above:  Dec. 30, 2002 - (left) Crew members work on salvage operations at the scene of a garage fire that was leveled by flames. Taken with Kodak digital cam.

 

   

Above:  Nov.28, 2002 - (left) Initial scene size up at MVA in 9000 block of Mentor Rd. (Right) Chardon crew members work to free a patient trapped in a car that was struck by an SUV. The TNT Rescue tool (Jaws) and "Meyer stabilizer" were used to remove the door.  The driver lost control and the car become wedged in a ditch.  The patients received only minor injuries.

 

    

 

Above:  Aug. 27, 2002 - Chardon crew members Mike Homovec, Phil Treadway, Willie Haines, Chris Fulton, Brad Kopcsyk, and John Blauch assist Metro Life personnel in stabilizing a man, who fell from a tree in Chardon Twp.  His injuries necessitated his transport to a trauma center. He is now home, and doing fine.

 

 

Above:  August 18, 2002 - Chardon Chief Engineer/Medic Mike Homovec, Medic Amy Gaspar, EMT Kevin Shea, and EMT Mark Jonovich attend to a bike accident victim on Aquilla Rd.  The bicyclist was treated at a local trauma center for his injuries.

 

 

 

Above:  August 6, 2002 - Chardon FD crews, assisted by Concord FD personnel worked to remove a trapped passenger in a construction truck, after it struck another vehicle on Ravenna Rd. at Clark Rd.  The personnel had to contend with a snapped pole and a high voltage power line, as they used airbags, TNT Rescue tools, and stabilizers to free the injured man. He was treated for minor injuries.

 

 

Above:  July 20, 2002 - (Right) Chardon Paramedic Phil Treadway and Burton FD personnel assist a Metro Life Flight nurse in caring for a victim of a motorcycle accident in Claridon Twp.  The victim died from his injuries.

 

 

 

Above:  July 27, 2002 - A chemical reaction due to a water leak caused a major industrial fire, bringing over 12 mutual aid departments to the scene. (Upper Left) Chief Larry Gaspar directs interior crews to direct water at a fire on the roof of Metal Coatings International on Industrial Parkway.  (Upper Right) Powered zinc reacts with water as fire crews dump dry sand into a drum.  (Lower left) Chardon's 1972 snorkle operates with AFFF foam cannisters in the foreground.  (Lower right) Dozens of hot, tired firemen visit the rehab sector to prepare their next assignment.  The air temperature was over 90 degrees on the day of the fire.

 

 

Above:  July 20, 2002 - (Left) This was all that was left of an older model pickup truck after the teenage driver lost control and slammed into a utility pole at Route 44 & Bass Lake Road.  The lucky driver sustained only minor injuries, but was charged with DUI.  The pole didn't do as well.

 

   

Above:  June 17, 2002 - Whoops!  Major damage occurred to the attached garage of this home on Canfield Dr. in the City of Chardon.  Apparently, the driver placed the vehicle in drive, instead of reverse.  Luckily, no one was injured.

 

 

Above:  May 29, 2002 - (Left) On Auburn Rd, south of Clark Rd., the driver of this Ford Tempo crawled out of the window and received only minor injuries.  His tire blew, causing him to lose control of the car. (Right) Maybe the book that was laying in the front seat had something to do with his minor injuries ????

 

 

Above:  May 23, 2002 - The teenage driver of this vehicle lost control of his car on Hermitage Rd. in Chardon Twp.  His car rolled end over end twice, sustaining heavy roof and body damage.  Seat belts and airbags saved all three teen occupants in this crash.  All were transported to local hospitals.  

 

Above:  May 10, 2002 - A car crashed into the back of a cargo truck, causing extensive damage to the car.  The driver was no injured.

 

 

Above:  May 5, 2002 - A car fire next to a house gave crews a run for their money as it also started a field fire behind the house, and threatened to start the side of the house on fire.  (Left) Initial scene picture, (Right) Crews hose down the house to prevent it from catching on fire. The fire was quickly brought under control by Asst. Chief Phil Treadway, Firefighters Brad Majetich and Gina Stutzman, and Pump Operator/Medic Rachel McCummins.

 

 

Above:  April 12, 2002 - (above left) A multiple vehicle accident at Rt. 322 & Aquilla injured 1 person. (Right) The victim is extricated by Asst. Chief Phil Treadway, Capt. John Blauch, Fire Medic Kristen Boehnlein, and Capt. Adam Georsky.

 

 

Above:  March 12, 2002 - A garbage truck pulls up to the fire station on fire.  Fire crews quickly attack the fire from above with the 30 year old snorkle, and handlines to keep the fuel tank cool.

 

 

 

Above:  Mar.1, 2002 - A morning rollover accident involving a teenage-driver necessitated removal of the vehicle roof to remove the victim (covered for protection from glass).  Asst. Chief Tom Hummel uses the new TNT rescue tool to remove the roof (upper right). FF/Paramedic Kristen Boehnlein attends to the victim (lower right).

 

 

Above:  Feb. 16, 2002 -  A burning transformer on a pole gets the attention of a First Energy employee.  The top of the pole came crashing down moments after these pictures were taken.  Power was restored within a few hours.  The fire was caused by ice.

 

   

Above:  Feb. 8, 2002 - Fire personnel disconnect the battery at this one-car accident on Mitchells-Mills. The driver fled the scene and was arrested.

 

Above:  Jan. 30, 2002 - This two-car accident required two rescue squads to transport several people with minor injuries.  Heavy fog contributed to this accident.

 

 

Above:  Jan. 23, 2002 - An accident involving alcohol caused this pickup truck to rollover on Mentor Rd.  The driver was arrested and the passenger was transported with minor injuries.

 

Above:  Jan. 17, 2002 - Fire & Sheriff personnel prepare to stabilize this vehicle, after it slid off the road in Chardon Twp. No injuries were reported.

 

Above:  Jan. 7, 2002 - Lt. Gary McKrill surveys the damage after a car slid off of Mentor Rd.  The driver sustained minor injuries and was transported.

 

 

Above:  Jan. 1, 2002 - A snowy road on New Year's Day made for difficult travel on Ravenna Road at the Northern Chardon City limits.  The driver sustained minor injuries and was treated and released.  The vehicle sustained heavy damage.
