FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Welcome to the Virtual Tour of the Chardon Fire Station
The new station is owned and structurally maintained by the Village of Chardon. The renovation was done by Envirocon, Inc. The Chardon Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. occupies the structure and has adapted it for use in fire and rescue service operations. Station History The original fire station was built in 1908, and was converted to a police station and municipal court room, when the fire department moved to an adjoining structure attached to the east side of the old bays. That eastern building, with two truck bays, was demolished this summer. Four new bays now exist on the east side of the fire station. The fire department offices, training room, and staff living quarters have been moved to the renovated building, formerly occupied by the police department and court. This area has been completely renovated. New Apparatus Bays Each of the four drive-through bays or garages have the ability to house two fire trucks or three rescue squads. This is a BIG change from our old fire station, where personnel used to squeeze trucks in by inches. The bays are set up with modern safety features, including carbon monoxide detectors, vehicle exhaust tubes (for working on running trucks), and smoke/heat detection systems, and even a remote shut-off for the stove upstairs. The bay doors can be opened from switches on near each door, or from two other points in the station. The firefighter's gear racks are located in the middle of the bays, between engines 3322 & 3323. This allows quick access to any truck in the bays.
The present placement of vehicles allows the following trucks to leave via the north exits (on the square; Both Rescue Squads (3353 & 3355), Front Line Engine 3322, Snorkle 3349, and Tanker 3338. Vehicles leaving via the south exits include: Command Car 3382, Reserve Engine 3323, 2nd Line Engine 3324, Utility Pickup 2299, and Jeep 3367. (See Pictures)
The only completely new room is an add-on to the back of the building. This room serves as a utility room, and houses heavy duty laundry machines, the air pack refilling system, and maintenance equipment. (See Pictures) Crew Quarters The upper floor of the west end of the station (formerly the court and law library) is comprised of a large, open kitchen/dining area, TV lounge (that is big enough to double as a meeting area), male and female dorm rooms, and separate shower/rest room facilities for each. (See pictures - Also see the new BEDS donated by Sand Ridge Golf Course).
Ground Floor (Offices, Training, & Maintenance) The ground floor at the west end of the station is comprised of a lobby with coffee/beverage bar, fire officials offices, trustees' conference room, radio operations room (formerly police dispatch), engineer's tool room/office, fire prevention office, EMS equipment & Oxygen Cascade Room, and the training room (formerly Village Council Chambers).
